As a young performer trained in Peruvian folk dance, Vanessa successfully booked a tour with Cecilia Bracamonte's folkloric ballet for the United States tour. She pursued and completed dual Bachelor of Arts degrees in Theatre and Dance at the University of Washington. She dedicated an extra year of academic study exploring the impact and legacy of AfroPeruvian dance and music on Peruvian culture culminating in academic lecture-demonstrations, undergraduate dance classes and public presentations at the University of Washington and in the community. She travelled to Lima, Ica and Trujillo to conduct oral interviews with primary sources including important AfroPeruvian music and dance pioneers such as the Santa Cruz and Ballumbrioso families. Her ethnographic study compared and analyzed the various approaches of diffusing folklore across generations and reflected on the distinctions between University and Academy School dance pedagogy. This experiential knowledge shapes her approach and sensibility to teaching and coaching movement influenced by diaspora traditions that are part of her cultural ancestry nurtured by her family.
Beyond her passion for heritage and the promotion of culture and art in everyone's life, Vanessa Villalobos is a professional dancer with a performance track in competitive Ballroom Latin, including Theatre Arts/cabaret, and commercial dance. She is featured in the blockbuster documentary hit, MadHot Ballroom as herself, a dance adjudicator, and in the Walt Disney partially animated film, Enchanted, appearing as a principle dancer. Ms. Villalobos is certified in American Ballroom Rhythm & Smooth and trained extensively in International Latin dance technique with New York favorites Tony Meredith and Melanie LaPatin of So You Think You Can Dance.
Dance is a lifestyle she cherishes and vastly enjoys introducing this human art form and connection vehicle to all people.
